Perfect harmony between the public and the Jury of experts enabled the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B to gain a one-two victory at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2019. The stylishly captivating and technically sophisticated two-door coupé from the year 1937 was crowned overall winner of the world’s most traditional heritage beauty contest for historic vehicles, just one day after its success in the Public Referendum. The event held under the motto “The Symphony of Engines – 90 Years of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este & BMW Automobiles” therefore became a solo for the rare gem from Milan. After winning the Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este, the owner of the vehicle awarded “Best of Show” by the Jury, American David Sydorick, was privileged also to receive the newly designed Trofeo BMW Group.

Ogni anno, l’attenzione per il design, l’originalità e il perfetto stato di conservazione riunisce a Cernobbio le vetture più belle e importanti del mondo, incarnandone il reale valore storico. Da venerdì 24 maggio a domenica 26, il Grand Hotel Villa d’Este e Villa Erba si sono trasformati in uno scenario unico ed esclusivo. Dopo aver conquistato la Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este, assegnata per refendum da parte del pubblico, l’Alfa Romeo 8C 2.900 B del 1937 ha messo d’accordo anche la giuria. E’ lei la “Best of Show” del Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2019.

Un gruppo giovane partito dal design dell’automotive. Oggi lo studio Borromeo De Silva si occupa anche di comunicazione e nautica. Abbiamo incontrato uno dei fondatori, Carlo Borromeo.

Il mese del design nella Grande Mela è stato un successo, tutta la città è stata protagonista di NEWYORKforDesign. In particolare “WantedDesign” ha animato Brooklyn e Manhattan.

Sempre in tema di auto d’epoca, subito dopo la 1000 Miglia si è svolto a Cernobbio il 90° Concorso d’Eleganza di Villa d’Este. Indovinate chi ha vinto?

Già insignita del "Best of Show" a Pebble Beach 2018, tra le 40 vetture che si sono contese la 90esima Coppa d’Oro di Villa d’Este, la più elegante è stata giudicata l’Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B, il meglio della tecnologia automobilistica degli anni Trenta: motore in lega leggera otto cilindri in linea bialbero a camme in testa con doppio compressore, cambio montato dietro, sospensioni indipendenti. Velocità, stile ed eleganza per questa berlinetta a passo lungo carrozzata Superleggera e prodotta da Touring in soli 5 esemplari, ultima evoluzione del progetto 8C 2300.
La Lancia Astura Serie IV – cabriolet quattro posti disegnata da Pinin Farina – ha saputo invece entusiasmare il pubblico di appassionati accorsi a Villa Erba ottenendo il Trofeo BMW Group Italia.
Il Trofeo BMW Group Ragazzi ha premiato ancora una volta il genio avveniristico dell’allora capo progettista della carrozzeria Bertone, Marcello Gandini. Il design “spaziale” e gli interni argentati della Lamborghini Marzal del 1967 hanno conquistato il cuore – e il voto – dei più giovani.
Tra le moto si è distinta la bicilindrica Koehler-Escoffier del 1929 del francese Dominique Buisson premiata a Villa Erba con il Trofeo BMW Group. La BMW R68 ha conquistato i favori del pubblico aggiudicandosi il Trofeo Villa Erba.
Il Design Award for Concept Cars & Prototypes, assegnato sempre per Referendum Pubblico a Villa Erba, è andato alla Bugatti La Volture Noire recentemente presentata al Salone di Ginevra. Tra le contendenti tra i prototipi anche la Peugeot e-Legend che ben sintetizza lo spirito del Concorso.

1964 Panhard CD LM64:
The most aerodynamically efficient

When a race car is displayed at the Concorso d'Eleganza of Villa d'Este, you know it must be special. And this Panhard CD LM64 is for sure. Only two of them were ever built in order to compete in the 1964 24 hours of Le Mans. Of course aiming for the victory wasn't their purpose, but rather a class win and even more importantly, the Index of Performance, which was awarded to the most efficient car. Unfortunately none of the two LM64s finish the race.

But what is so special about this race car? The Panhard LM64 owes its competitiveness to its aerodynamic and "slippery" fibreglass bodywork, able to give the car a record-breaking Cx (drag coefficient/air penetration coefficient) of 0.12, which was never equalled since then by a race car. Thanks to this and a low weight (560 kg), it was able to reach some incredible performances considered the little 848cc supercharged flat twin engine with just 78 hp: on the Mulsanne straight the LM64 was able to reach speeds near the 220 km/h mark.

The various classes are organised in different categories and judged by a world-famous jury headed by Jury President, Lorenzo Ramaciotti.

Once again, the unique Concorso di Motociclette will be held in the grounds of the equally famous Villa Erba located close to the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este. Since 2011, this has been the Concorso d’Eleganza’s peer event hosting the world’s most famous two-wheeled legends.

The Concorso d´Eleganza Villa d´Este in 2020 will take place from 22nd May to 24th May. This heritage event was first held in 1929 and we are therefore proud to announce the celebration of its 90th anniversary.

During the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2019 I have filmed this 1967 Lamborghini Marzal Concept.

In 1966 Lamborghini had impressed the specialized press and the public with the launch of its legendary Miura. The year after this success, Ferruccio Lamborghini decided to undertake an even more ambitious project: using the Bertone bodywork for their first four-seater sports car.

Thus the Marzal was born, designed by Marcello Gandini on behalf of the Turin coachbuilder. The 4-passenger cockpit worked with a frame (which was 12 centimetres longer than the Miura's one) and with the placement of the cantilever engine behind the rear wheel axle.

Among the characteristic signs of the design were the doors with large glazed surfaces and a gull-wing opening made, as well as the roof, by the Belgian company Glaverbel.

The heart of the vehicle was a 6-cylinder 2.0 power unit with a capacity of 175 hp and 220 Nm of torque managed by a five-speed manual transmission. Equipped with rear-wheel drive, the Marzal was able to reach the top speed of 220 km/h with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds.

The car was such a huge success, that the next year would have been used as a model for the development of the 1968 Espada.

The Marzal appeared in action at a public event for the first time at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix when Prince Rainier III, accompanied by his wife, Princess Grace, drove the car on his traditional parade lap before the start of the race. The car made a second public appearance at the 1996 Concours Italiano in Monterey, California in honor of Carrozzeria Bertone. The Lamborghini Athon was also exhibited at this time.

The Marzal was located for a long time in the Bertone Design Study Museum, and it was sold in auction at Villa d'Este (Italy) on 21 May 2011, for the highest bid of 1,350,000 Euros, approximately 2 million dollars.

This time I've made a video of my road trip to Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2019. Thanks to Dusseldorp BMW we got to drive a brand new BMW 420d during our trip.

We started in Holland, drove through Switerland (Basel, Isenthal, Andermatt, Oberalppass, Lukmanierpass, Rheinschlucht, Viamala, Andeer and the Splügenpass) to Italy (Chiavenna, Cernobbio) where we arrived in Cernobbio at Villa d'Este.
