Y es que en esta edición del Concorso d’Eleganza, el Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Berlinetta Touring de las imágenes, fabricado en 1937, ha ganado varios galardones, como la 'Coppa d'Oro Villa d'Este' o el premio 'Best In Show', que le otorga el honor de ser el mejor coche del disputado concurso.
Se trata de un precioso ejemplar de los únicos 30 que Alfa Romeo fabricó con carrocería coupé de dos puertas entre 1937 y 1940, y este en concreto es una de las únicas diez unidades de batalla larga y uno de los cinco Berlinetta, con chasis tubular de acero y carrocería de aluminio, a cargo por cierto del carrocero milanés Carrozzeria Touring.
El modelo, basado sobre la misma plataforma del exitoso 8C 2900B de carreras pero "domesticado" para la calle, esconde un motor 2.9 litros de ocho cilindros en línea fabricado en aleación, con doble árbol de levas en cabeza y dos compresores volumétricos, para una potencia máxima de alrededor de 182 CV. Se trata del chasis 412020, restaurado en los años noventa.
Además, goza de suspensión independiente y una transmisión montada en la parte trasera. Aunque en este concurso de belleza lo que se juzga es la estética, es indudable que a nivel técnico este Alfa 8C era también un adelantado a su tiempo. El mismo ejemplar, de hecho, ganó también el año pasado el galardón 'Best of Show' en el Concurso de Elegancia de Pebble Beach.
"He ganado muchos premios con mis automóviles, pero este vehículo satisface todos mis deseos. Ser el mejor del concurso en Villa d'Este es como ser nombrado Caballero del Imperio. A mi esposa y a mi nos gustaría expresar nuestro sentido agradecimiento por este premio", afirmaba el orgulloso propietario de este Alfa Romeo, David Sydorick.

Como cada año, el famoso Lago de Como, en el norte de Italia, acoge uno de los concursos de elegancia más famosos del mundo del automóvil, Villa d'Este, y es la ocasión perfecta para contemplar algunos de los coches más bonitos de todos los tiempos, como este Alfa Romeo.

The 2019 edition of the Concorso D'eleganza of Villa d'este sponsored by BMW ended yesterday. After having conquered the Golden Cup Villa d'este (assigned to Refendum public Saturday in the gardens of the Grand Hotel Villa d'este), the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B has also agreed the jury. She is the "Best of Show" of the Concorso d'eleganza Villa d'este 2019.

During the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2019 held at Cernobbio, Italy, I have filmed this unique Gyro-X 2-wheeled car.
The brainchild of Alex Tremulis, famous stylist and Automobile Hall of Fame inductee, and Thomas Summers, a gyroscope expert, the Gyro-X is a two-wheeled, gyroscopically-stabilized prototype vehicle constructed in 1967. Proposed as a possible solution for future transportation, the two-wheeled vehicle provided many thought-provoking ideas for revolutionizing transportation.
Why only two wheels? Tremulis and Summers suggested that a two wheeled vehicle could be more efficient than its larger four-wheeled counterpart. Smaller and lighter weight means it can use a smaller engine.
The Gyro-X was reported to reach speeds of 125 mph using an 80 hp Mini Cooper S engine. Also, the gyroscope’s stored kinetic energy would be harnessed as an additional power source in future gyro vehicles! The aerodynamic body design reduced wind resistance, while half the number of tires reduced road drag. As far as drivability, two wheels made for greater maneuverability, like that of a motorcycle. While a two-wheeled automobile may at first glance seem unsafe and definitely unstable, the Gyro-X made use of a single 22- inch hydraulically-driven gyroscope which stabilized the vehicle, allowing it to “swoop through 40 degree banked turns without tipping.” The Gyro-X was displayed for the first time at “The Wonderful World of Wheels”, an exhibit at the 1967 New York International Auto Show. Of the vehicles presented, the Gyro-X was included, offering a sneak peek into the possible future of the automobile. In September of that year, the cover of Science and Mechanics magazine featured the car on the cover, exclaiming its merits as “impossible to skid or flip”, “125 mph on 2 wheels with 80 hp”, and “can bank at 40 degrees!”
Although the Gyro-X was promoted as the future of vehicles, and there is a video of it running, witnesses recount that at high speeds, over 70 mph, the vehicle was unstable. It is possible the engineering was too complex and needed more development to perform as advertised and the company, which went bankrupt, ran out of funds to perfect the product. Regardless of the actual events that transpired, Gyro Transport Systems, Inc. went under around 1970 and the Gyro-X never went into production.
In a letter written in July of 1970 to Gyro Dynamics Corporation, parent company of Gyro Transport Systems, Alex Tremilus mentions that he is greatly disturbed, most notably by the fact that the Gyro-X vehicle was parked outside, uncovered, and exposed to the elements and vandalism. He further mentions that had he been consulted, he could have arranged for the vehicle to be loaned to a museum for safekeeping until the courts decided its final disposition.

During Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2019 I have filmed the Touring Superleggera Sciadipersia Cabriolet, based on the Maserati GranCabrio.
After making its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year, the Touring Superleggera Sciadipersia Cabriolet showed up again at the 2019 Villa d'Este Concours. The open-top grand tourer will compete for the Design Award during the 90th edition of the event.
“We are thrilled at the idea of contending for the Design Award again this year, with a growing number of other companies that follow suit in entering the coach built domain. It is good for the Concorso and for our business alike,” Piero Mancardi, CEO of Superleggera, comments.
In Geneva two months ago, we saw a Night Blue example of the car but the one that’s going to be on display at Villa d'Este has a different finish. The second produced example of the cabriolet is painted in “a delicate shade of sand over ochre and cream.” The interior features contrasting white stitching which makes for a perfect color combination “for the glamorous venue on the lake Como shores.”
The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible-based cabrio offers room for four passengers and the automaker promises the seats are large enough to comfortably accommodate four grown-ups. The overall look of the car, Superleggera says, is inspired by the Golden Age of Motoring with “classic and timeless design that continues to set standards.”
Power is provided by a naturally-aspirated V8 engine pushing out 460 horsepower (338 kilowatts) at 7,000 rpm. Power reaches the rear wheels through a six-speed ZF automatic gearbox. The estimated 0-62 miles per hour (0-100 kilometers per hour) acceleration takes about five seconds, while top speed is 179 mph (288 kph).
The Italian coachbuilder plans to produce exactly 15 examples of the convertible grand tourer. Each one will be built entirely by hand at the company’s plant near Milan. Pricing details are still not available and Touring Superleggera says it will give further information to interested customers upon request.
