ALCRAFT MOTOR BUILDS SCALE MODEL OF ELECTRIC GT

15th December 2015

Development of Alcraft Motor Company’s dramatic electric GT is now well advanced, and with the exterior design signed off in late October the company has commissioned the build of a 33% scale model for verification of the surfaces.

The model, made of high-density foam, has given the team its first opportunity to view the design as a physical 3D object – and it passed the test with flying colours.

“Although we model the car as a 3D object through the design process, using specialist vehicle design software, building a physical model is still a vital process for stress-testing the design from all angles and with different light sources,” says Head of Design Matthew Humphries.

“This can highlight any surfaces or interactions that haven’t worked quite as we intended, but I was really pleased with how successfully the design translated from the digital to the physical.

“It worked exactly as it should have done from all angles, and as it’s been designed with the necessary legislative requirements factored in I’d expect us to make only small changes as the development of the car progresses.”

From this month Alcraft Motor company has a new business address – at the world-renowned Silverstone race circuit complex in the UK, home to the British Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The company will operate from the Innovation Centre, a business complex within Silverstone Park, which is now a globally recognised destination for engineering, innovation and business development.

“Silverstone is at the heart of the UK’s ‘Motor Sport Valley’, and close to much of the UK’s car manufacturing and supply base,” says Alcraft Motor Company managing director David Alcraft.

“Silverstone Park is also home to our engineering partner Delta Motorsport, and a high-performance technology and motor sport cluster is developing around the facility, which is perfect for us as we develop a business founded on British leadership in skills such as engineering and design.”

Alcraft Motor builds top-quality supply chain

7th November 2016

press-sketch-1-800x700.jpg
Alcraft Motor Company is putting together the supply chain necessary to support the design and build of it first car, the high-performance electric Alcraft GT.

The virtual engineering process already undertaken alongside the design programme means that all major components and systems have been considered in detail.

As a result the company now has agreements in place with several global suppliers including Continental for safety systems and Michelin for tyres. In addition there are agreements with British partners, notably motor control specialist Sevcon and composite materials specialist KS Composites. The engineering partner is Delta Motorsport, based like Alcraft Motor Company at Silverstone.

“We’re very pleased to have so many world-leading companies involved with our project already,” says Alcraft Motor founder David Alcraft. “We’re committed to building a supplier and partner base within the UK wherever possible and are fortunate in having the UK’s technology cluster and F1’s ‘Motor Sport Valley’ on our doorstep.

“However, achieving the quality levels we’re after means that for some components and systems we inevitably have to turn to companies that are not British, and we’re absolutely delighted to be able to name Continental and Michelin at this stage in our development.”

Alcraft Motor Company Reveals First Car

1st September 2017

Crowdfunding Campaign Offers Chance to Help Bring Spectacular British Electric GT to Production.

British electric vehicle start-up Alcraft Motor Company has revealed details of its first car, the high-performance Alcraft GT. The business is targeting a start of production in 2019, and is launching a crowdfunding campaign offering the chance to play a part in the development of the car and a new British brand.

Alcraft Motor Company has been founded by businessman David Alcraft. He has assembled a core team including Charles Morgan, previously of Morgan Motor Company, ex-Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders CEO Christopher Macgowan, designer Matt Humphries who also spent time at Morgan, and ex-Toyota, Daewoo and Michelin senior executive Mark Carbery.

The engineering partner is Silverstone-based Delta Motorsport, whose expertise in electric drivetrains and battery systems sees it working both with global car manufacturers and at the highest levels of motor sport. Other partners include specialist British companies Sevcon and KS Composites, and agreements are in place with major Tier 1 suppliers including Continental for safety systems and Michelin for tyres.

“We want to build a British car company which brings together traditional skills and high technology for the emerging low carbon car market”, says Alcraft Motor founder and managing director David Alcraft.

“We’re about combining great design, outstanding dynamics and the visceral thrill of electric powertrains to create products that are high in performance and desirability but very usable. We hope this will establish a niche For Alcraft Motor in Britain’s renowned specialist low-volume car industry.”

THE CAR

The Alcraft GT is not another electric supercar – it’s extremely sporty yet practical, with a shooting brake-style rear giving access to a 500-litre luggage area, and a 300-mile range.

The fundamental concept is battery-only, but has been designed and engineered so that a range-extender could be added. It has also been designed so that it can be made as a 2+2 rather than a two-seater.

Although there has been an emphasis on developing a car with outstanding handling and dynamics, the absolute numbers associated with the three-motor, four-wheel drive powertrain are impressive. Virtual engineering has provided expected figures of 840 lb ft torque and 600hp which, with four-wheel drive, torque vectoring, and light weight, result in an estimated 0-62mph time of 3.5 secs. The batteries are in a T-shaped pack between and behind the driver and passenger seats.

The design features ultra-clean surfaces and visible structural elements. The exposed carbon-fibre B-pillars and roof structure are part of the aesthetic but serve as both a safety cell and a device to create an exceptionally light cabin, with a roof made largely of glass and a wraparound front screen.

A 33% foam model, which was made for design verification purposes, can be seen at the Alcraft Motor Company booth at the Cenex Low Carbon Vehicle Event at the Millbrook proving ground in Bedfordshire on Sept 6th and 7th.

CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN

With the design of the Alcraft GT complete and virtual engineering undertaken for core systems and regulatory requirements, the next step is to build a full running prototype.

The business is launching a rewards-based crowdfunding campaign to support this, with the balance coming from equity funding. The crowdfunding bands start at £10 and go up to £25,000. Rewards include VIP days at Silverstone with rides in a development mule for the GT, featuring similar battery, motor and torque vectoring technologies to those which will be in the GT, and exclusive electric bikes by Cyclotricity and wristwatches by Matthew Humphries Design.
