Stefan Wiedenhofer won the first Hillclimb of the year in Austria at the wheel of his evolved Mitsubishi Mirage. The AWD, 4G63 engined Monster is now fully tuned by Gabat and with over 700Hp, some proper Wings and sporting a Widened Bodykit, it displays some impressive speed.

In a way, this looks just like the type of Car Mitsubishi Motors would create if they entered the WRC on 2018 under the new Rulebook.

Fabrizio Casciaro from Belgium races this spectacular looking K20A powered Honda Civic Eg6, capable of 240Hp/9.000Rpm. Although still using stock internals, it features Jenvey ITB´s among other goodies to reach the respectable power figure.

But it´s the bodywork that suffered major changes in this Monster has it features a bespoke Widebody kit with some quite extreme Aerodynamic features, while a lot ot effort was made too to make this Japanese Hatchback as light as possible.

¿Adiós al BoP? La FIA desarrolla un nuevo sistema de equilibrio de rendimiento para Montaña

Las Subidas de Montaña son posiblemente una de las disciplinas más heterogéneas del automovilismo Mundial, pudiendo ver en una misma competición a vehículos carrozados, monoplazas y barquetas luchando por los mejores tiempos. Precisamente es esta variedad que le hace especial la misma que complica mucho el balancear el rendimiento entre coches provenientes de los circuitos como Lamborghini Supertrofeo o el recién adquirido por Fombona, Audi A5 DTM, con barquetas como la de Simone Faggioli. Para ello, la FIA ha estado trabajando durante los últimos meses en la creación de un nuevo sistema que permita clasificar a los vehículos en sus respectivas categorías a través de una ecuación que determine su rendimiento.

En una iniciativa creada por la Comisión de Subidas de Montaña y con el apoyo del Departamento Técnico de la FIA, el “Performance factor” o PF nace con el objetivo de crear un marco técnico compartido que permita la inclusión de un mayor número de automóviles, excluyendo en este caso los vehículos híbridos, eléctricos y aquellos que cuenten con motores de combustión interna de más de 6.500 cc. Todos los coches deberán cumplir con los estándares de seguridad exigidos por la FIA, pero permitirá la presencia de vehículos homologados y aquellos cuyo pasaporte técnico ya ha expirado.

El concepto PF tendrá en cuenta medir el factor de rendimiento a través de una relación “peso/PF” en los que se tendrá en cuenta cinco variables: el peso del vehículo sin conductor, el motor, la aerodinámica, la transmisión y la estructura del chasis. Cada participante deberá ingresar en una aplicación de móvil de descarga gratuita hasta 30 valores técnicos de su automóvil, los cuales completarán una fórmula que dará directamente el Factor de Rendimiento.

Con este resultado se determinará la clase a la que se pertenece reduciendo los 15-25 grupos que nos podemos encontrar en la actualidad en determinadas pruebas a apenas media docena de categorías en las que competirán vehículos de rendimiento similar. Todos los datos estarán disponibles en una base de datos a la que podrán acceder los participantes, verificadores y organización y todo cambio que se realice en el vehículo que pueda alterar el rendimiento deberá ser notificado antes de la siguiente carrera.

La intención es la de facilitar a los espectadores entender las carreras, especialmente en aquellas en las que los vehículos de la competición europea se pueden encontrar con participantes de campeonatos nacionales/regionales, o incluso en pruebas en las que un mismo modelo de coche se puede encontrar en distintas clasificaciones. Además, la FIA pretende que haya más vehículos que puedan participar, aprovechando que ahora se evaluará precisamente ese rendimiento del vehículo.

El sistema será puesto a prueba virtualmente durante este 2018 en el Campeonato de Europa de Montaña. Las clasificaciones serán ofrecidas en el formato tradicional, pero además se establecerán unas nuevas en función a este Factor de Rendimiento durante los eventos FIA, adoptándola definitivamente de cara a 2019. En esta etapa, la aplicación del concepto está dirigida a los carrozados (turismos, GT y siluetas), pero en el futuro se espera implementar una metodología similar para monoplazas y barquetas. ¿La solución definitiva para acabar con el Balance of Performance y optar por una solución más objetiva? Veremos…

Vincenzo Manganiello "V-Max" is an Italian Hillclimb-Slalom Specialist and among the many different Prototypes he used on this peculiar events he got famous by the wild driving style used at the wheel of this 500Kg spaceframed FIAT X1/9 powered by a Suzuki GSX-R1000 engine capable of around 200Hp/12.000Rpm. And more than words, this one is better be seen to be believed...

Roger Schnellmann and his ever-evolving Lancer Evolution (pun intended all the way). Nowadays with over 700Hp/800Nm from the 4G63 engine and weighing 1120Kg, this Monster is capable of a 0-100Km/h sprint in 2,5 seconds.

Here you can see it action on last year´s edition of St. Ursanne - Les Rangiers Hillclimb where it was the second fastest Touring Car only behind a certain SLK340 Judd V8..

Jezz Francis races this highly modified Vauxhall Nova 1.6L on British Circuit Racing series like SpecialSaloons and Modsports, where it shines thanks to its low weight of under 800Kg and a quite lively 200Hp/8.500Rpm 1.6L engine.

Last year it tried Hillclimbing for the first time, being on eof the special invitations of Retro Rides Gathering 2017 at Shelsley Walsh. Wrong gearing and little chance to heat properly the tires made it a difficult debut but it still looked fantastic while trying.

Ruedi Fuhrer races on the Swiss HillClimb Championship a true JDM hero. A second gen Honda CRX powered by a F20 engine (from the Honda S2000) with around 280Hp all produced in Naturally Aspirated form at around 9.200Rpm. The 90´s Coupé has also seen its weight severely reduced, displaying now numbers in the proximity of 800Kg of dry weight.

Travis Pastrana broke the Overall Record of the famous Mount Washington Hillclimb last summer at the wheel of this specially prepared Subaru WRX STI.

Using an unrestricted engine from the GRC Subaru while moving a lightened body from the Rally Car used by Subaru USA, it achievend the summit of the Mountain in 5:44.72, a new record that will stand for at least two more years unitl this Hillclimb is held again.

At Kitzeck Hilclimb we saw 2 Legendary Monsters tuned by Gabat fighting for victory on the E1-4WD Class. Werner Hofer´s 650Hp Escort Cosworth and Felix Pailer´s 650Hp Lancia Delta battled to the end for Top Spot.

Two extreme versions of Cars that are natural rivals since the 90´s on WRC and have carried the competition until today, now transformed to a level that is far beyond what anyone imagined before.

With a 2.0 Naturally Aspirated engine producing over 300Hp/10.000Rpm to move only 825Kg. This recipe on a RWD machine makes for some spectacular footage as shown here on St. Agatha HillClimb 2012.

This beautiful Ford Escort Mk2 is a Group 4 Zakspeed unit properly tuned for Hillclimb Racing on the German Berg-Cup series.

Owned and driven by Werner Weiss for around 20 years, it was evolved to this day into a 270Hp/9.500rpm machine, thanks to its 1.8L BDA engine in Naturally Aspirated form, while using a 6-speed sequential gearbox and weighing only around 820Kg.

This last weekend on Pöllauberg Hillclimb and marking its 20th Anniversary, Two very special returns occurred. The Legendary Lancia Delta Integrale ex-Franz Nowak, most famously known as "Yellow Bull" and Multiple Champion/Top Tuner Andreas Gabat.

The Austrian Ace drove this spectacular 700+Hp Monster impressively, despite some being somewhat outdated (didn´t race regularly since 2009), and finished only around 3 seconds from 1st Overall place. Will we see this Duo return in the near Future?....

Reinhard Hartel was the driver and creator of this unique take on the Classic Alpine A110. Powered by a 2.0L Works Engine by Renault Sport coupled with a 6-Speed Gearbox, this 270Hp Naturally Aspirated machine raced with great success on the German Berg-Cup Series between 1996 and 2001.

Weighing only around 650Kg, this Rear-Engined machine proved not only successful against the clock but also among the fans thanks to its wild yet beautiful looks.

Driven by Thomas Kessler, it is one of the recognizable Hillclimb Race Cars from Switzerland with its very aggressive Voltex bodykit.

Romeo Nussli is the current owner of what is probably the most developed Ford Escort Cosworth of Hillclimb Racing. With over 700Hp from its Cosworth YB Turbo engine , this was the Monster raced and built by Andreas Gabat, the very owner of Gabat Tuning.

Right now it is raced on the highly competitive Swiss Hillclimb Championship and selected event events all over Europe, like Pollauberg, in Austria where it got a 4th Place Overall and was the 2nd fastest 4wd Car

This is Stephen Armstrong´s creation, a SA22C RX-7 built to be a perfect replica of the car campaigned by Alan Moffat in the 80´s on Ausralian Circuit Racing.

Powered by a fuel-injected 13BPP engine capable of around 320Hp/9.000Rpm to move around 950Kg, using a 6-speed sequential gearbox and Official Mazda Racing hardware, this is not only a comprehensible replica build but also a proper machine on its own right.

Diethard Sternad started the 2018 Hillclimb Season in very strong manner, by winning the E1-2000cc Class at St. Andra-Kitzeck Hillclimb.

After strong showings on both Pollauberg and Rechberg ensured he is set to fight for the title at the wheel of his beautifu Alfa Romeo 156 Touring Car, powered by a 2.0L Naturally Aspirated engine capable of 310Hp/9.000Rpm and lightened to a very slim 975Kg.
