1970 Lancia Stratos Zero:
A crazy concept from the Wedge Era
- Sound & Driving on the Streets!

I don't know why but I have a soft spot for the so called "Wedge Era", an automotive period that started from the late 1960s when car's design moved away from the curved and soft lines for a more sharpened and defined style.

If the production cars reflected this philosophy (like the BMW M1, Lamborghini Countach or the Lotus Esprit for example), concept cars took this design to the extreme. And the Stratos HF Zero is one of the most striking examples. Born in 1970, the initial concept behind the Zero for Bertone's design team was simply to see how low a car they could built (in those years there was a great rivalry between car designer, especially between Bertone and Pininfarina, who a few months ago unveiled their 93.5 cm tall Pininfarina Modulo). The Stratos was designed by Marcello Gandini to be 84 cm (33 inches) from the ground!

The name would be used on Lancia's rally-going car a few years later, but this concept had little to do with that. It's powered by a Lancia "Type 818.540" engine (1.6-liter V4 13°, with 115hp) taken from a Lancia Fulvia HF. Everything else looks like something coming directly from a 70s science fiction film and be inspired by space (remember that a year before there was the Apollo 11 mission): the steering wheel was made in order to resemble the planet Saturn, driving position was as horizontal and as close to the ground as it could possibly be so the driver had nothing but the road in front of him and the sky above him, a futuristic instrument panel offset to the side behind the front wheel-arch and rear-view mirrors sunk inside the side scallops allowed for somewhat limited rear vision.

In 1988 a replica of this car was built for Michael Jackson's film "Moonwalker".

I was able to record this unique car during the 2018 Concorso d'Eleganza of Villa D'Este in Cernobbio so now you can see many angles and detailed shots of it, hear the sound of the narrow angle V4 and see it moving around. Hope you like the video!

ALFA ROMEO (TIPO) 33/2 STRADALE SOUND

During Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2018 I have filmed this Alfa Romeo (Tipo) 33/2 Stradale.

This year’s winner of the Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este is the Alfa Romeo 33/2 Stradale, which was presented in the award class “New World, new Ideas: The Story of the GT” at the world’s most exclusive beauty contest for historic vehicles, and the contest with the richest heritage tradition.

The coupé derived from a racing sports car received the coveted award on the 50th anniversary of its creation. The mid-engine sports car from the Italian marque captivated the visitors with
the spectacular styling of its body shrouding a lightweight chassis and a 230 hp V8 engine.

The Swiss collector Albert Spiess is the owner of the rare treasure finished in bright red paintwork. He received the trophy in the garden of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este accompanied by applause from the public. Spiess’s passion for collecting primarily concentrates on Italian rare treasures and this is not his first major success at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

The Alfa Romeo (Tipo) 33/2 Stradale is Alfa's magnum opus, taking styling cues from the Le Mans-dominating Ferrari 330 P4. Although the 33 Stradale's two-liter V-8 only makes about 230 horsepower, it revs to a staggering 10,000 RPM and can hit 160 miles per hour. Only 18 cars were built between 1967 and 1969 so one would be hard pressed to find a running example that's not tucked away in a museum, let alone driving around in Cernobbio, Italy.

We not only get to see the well-maintained 33 Stradale on display but get to listen to it drive around the Concours grounds, an experience few will ever get to enjoy. Prizes of this car are estimated $10,000,000 for this immaculate example.

This is the very first time I saw this icon in real life and I have to admit it blew my mind. Maybe it's just that engine sound, maybe for its dimensions and shapes but I finally understood why it's considered one of the most beautiful car ever made.

The first prototype was shown to the public in 1967 during the Italian F1 GP in Monza and the plan was to built a little limited series of 50 examples. But only 18 were built and possibly only 10 of them are still in existence. It's also one of the few road-legal cars to be created after the racing version featuring all the mechanical and technological characteristics of Alfa's experience on the track.

Based on the successful Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2, the body of the Stradale (which means "road legal" in Italian) was designed by Franco Scaglione. Compared to the race car the chassis was made in aluminuim and elongated a bit, plus the engine was depowered. This is a 2.0-litre V8 engine with 230 hp with an insane 10,000 rpm red line that was able to push the 700 kg car from 0 to 100 Km/h in just 5,5 seconds and hit a top speed of 270 km/h.
The car was launched on the market at an astronomical sum of almost 10 million Italian lire of the period (for a mere comparison you needed around 5 millions to buy a Jaguard and 6 for a Ferrari).

Watch a few detailed shots of this beauty I saw during the 2018 Concorso d'Eleganza of Villa d'Este in Cernobbio and hear the great sound of the V8 engine doing a loud warm up and driving!

FERRARI 250 GTO SOUND! - Villa d'Este 2018

During the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2018 I have filmed this beautiful Ferrari 250 GTO. Considering that a 250 GTO switches owner for roughly $50 million, this would be the most expensive car on the world. But than you didn't knew about the story of the most expensive car crash!

One of the stars of the tracks of the 1960s was a Ferrari 250 GTO which has just emerged from a two-year-plus renovation at the Ferrari Classiche department, ready to return to its owner in America. During its stay in Maranello, the car was restored to the original engine and bodywork configuration in which it was delivered to Bologna-based publisher Luciano Conti in 1962. The latter also drove it in its maiden race, the Bologna-Passo della Raticosa.

In June 1962, however, Chassis no. 3445 was sold to Count Giovanni Volpi di Misurata, a passionate racing driver, who competed under the S.S.S. Repubblica di Venezia insignia. During this particular stage of its career, the car also won the Trophée d'Auvergne with Carlo Maria Abate at its wheel.

In April 1963, the 250 GTO was purchased by Swede Ulf Norinder who, to comply with the racing regulations of the day, changed its livery from the original red to blue and yellow colours of Sweden. Mr Norinder then drove it to victory in the Vastkustloppet in his home nation. The car also finished second twice in the Targa Florio (with Bordeu and Scarlatti in 1963, and 1964 with Norinder and Pico Troiberg, the latter time as no. 112 which it still bears today).

This much is known: In 2012, while competing in a vintage road rally near Blois, France, American Christopher Cox and his wife, Ann, were injured when their 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO collided with a passenger car. The crash was severe enough to leave Ann Cox with broken bones, and while images of the accident are essentially nonexistent, damage to the car’s front and right side was said to be considerable.

When it comes to the repair of such a valuable Ferrari, the best source may well be Ferrari itself; now, over two years later, Ferrari Classiche has announced the completion of repairs to Cox’s GTO.

Media outlets wasted no time in calling the July 2012 incident the “world’s most expensive car crash,” thanks to the lofty value of the Ferrari 250 GTO. Two months prior to the accident, in May of 2012, another Ferrari 250 GTO (built for Stirling Moss) sold in a private transaction for a reported $35 million. That’s not to say that Cox’s car, which lacked the celebrity driver provenance, carried an identical value, but as one of just 36 Ferrari 250 GTOs built (39 if one counts the three 330 GTOs), chassis 3455GT was still worth a significant amount of money and represented an important chapter of Ferrari’s racing history.

To ensure its continued value, Cox entrusted Ferrari Classiche, a division of the Maranello-based automaker that specializes in maintenance, repair and restoration of classic Ferraris. The two-year repair involved far more than just panel beating, as Ferrari Classiche claimed the repair order also returned the car to the original engine and bodywork configuration present at its 1962 delivery. The Swedish national livery was added by a later owner, Ulf Norinder, who acquired chassis 3455GT in April of 1963.

It was under Norinder’s ownership that the car saw its greatest racing successes, achieving a victory at Vastkustloppet, Sweden, and a pair of podium finishes in the 1963 and 1964 Targa Florio. In the years since, the Ferrari has been enjoyed by a variety of owners around the globe, with most exercising the car regularly at vintage events.

Cox, who purchased chassis 3455GT in June of 2005, continued the tradition, and it’s oddly fitting that the car was damaged during a motorsport event highlighting the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari GTO.

It’s impossible to know exactly how much Ferrari Classiche charged for repairs (or even if the at-fault driver’s insurance put a dent in the repair costs), but it’s safe to say that a factory restoration negates any doubt over the car’s future net worth.

A magnificent setting, a parade of two-, three- and four-wheeled stars, film scenarios and a surprise ending for the winner: the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2018 which took place on Sunday in Cernobbio had its climax with the delivery of the BMW Group trophy to the Ferrari 335 Sport. As the final moment of the competition, which was held under the motto "Hollywood on the Lake", the soundtracks of the film were performed, as the President of the jury Lorenzo Ramaciotti explained while conferring recognition to the racing car of 1958 which was chosen as "Best of Show". To get the second place in the public's preferences the youngest of a decade Alfa Romeo 33/2 Stradale. The coupé was chosen by visitors as the winner of the Villa d'Este Gold Cup and the BMW Group Italy Trophy. The winner of the Motociclette Competition is Moto Major, a rarity of 1948.

For three days, the picturesque landscapes of Lake Como, the sumptuous surroundings of the Grand Hotel Villa d'Este and the extensive parks of Villa Erba represented the perfect setting for the parade of historic cars and motorcycles, which fascinated the public and the jury not only for their extraordinary characteristics, but also for their interesting stories. In all, the participants were able to admire 50 classic cars, 25 motorcycles and 5 sidecars of all ages. The variety of vehicles that took part in the event and their elegant presentation once again represented the distinctive element of the initiative jointly organized by BMW and the Grand Hotel Villa d'Este.
